Indoor Gardening Lights and Shelving

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Susanne Garris Its always springtime when you have an indoor garden complete with lights and shelving. With the right setup, you can start seedlings, grow herbs, or experiment with orchids and other flowering exotics. One of the first things you will need to address for your indoor gardening is lighting. No matter what else you do for your plants, if they do not have the proper lighting they will not thrive. Lighting is, in fact, the most important aspect of indoor gardening. When choosing decorative plants for your home, if you want to start without special lighting, look for plants that require medium to low light, like Philodendrons, some ivy and some ferns. Plant are quick to let you know they are unhappy when they are not getting enough light. Symptoms are thin stems and small leaves. Most plants with medium light requirements will benefit from a south facing window. Windows that face east and west will generally give plants with medium light requirements adequate sunlight, as well. However, plants that prefer low light will probably prefer a north facing window. Even in the middle of winter, an unobstructed south- or east-facing window will admit sufficient light to nurture all but the most sun-loving plants. Of course, light will be increased if you open the drapes or pull up the shades. Additionally, houseplants should be rotated every other week to expose all sides to the sunbeams. Bay windows, sun porches and rooms with skylights that provide light coming from several angles tend to nurture your inside garden the best; but, any window will do if plants are positioned so they don’t lurk in each other’s shadows. Now you get to decide what kind of plants you want to grow inside! There are hundreds of different houseplants that will happily grow and thrive on your windowsill. What you choose is based on your style and dcor. I prefer the herbs that lend a Country French style, but you may like the Southwest style of cacti. Country living lends itself to the lush and leafy plants. Your interior style will often decide the plants you will chose. But theres nothing wrong with just picking your favourite! There are no rules when you unleash your green thumb. When you arrive at your local garden center, look for foliage plants which appear to be insect and disease free. Check the undersides of the foliage and leaves for signs of insects or disease. Select plants that look sturdy, clean, well potted, shapely, and well-covered with leaves. Choose plants with healthy foliage. Avoid plants which have yellow leaves. Plants which have new flowers and leaf buds along with young growth are usually of superior quality. For the serious indoor gardener, there are specially built lights and shelves. Home-built light carts are normally less expensive than commercial units. If you are handy with tools, you can build a shelving unit for only $50-$100 dollars while others have cost $1000 or more ready built commercial model. It all depends on what you choose. Your local hardware store is a far more cost effective place to shop for these rather than a specialty garden shop. You will enjoy many days surrounded by flourishing green plants despite the weather, when you decide to grown using indoor gardening lights and shelving. RC Flight Simulators

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Nikoli Funston If there is an area where RC has advanced dramatically, it is in simulators. RC flight simulators used to be cheesy, but now are outstanding. A Remote Control flight simulator is a computer software program in a video game format that allows you to replicate the feeling of flying an actual RC model airplane on your PC. The idea of flight simulation computer games was developed with some of the earliest gaming computers. The early flight simulators were not useful for RC training because the programs and graphics were still rather primitive. The recent increased capacity for gaming and graphic reproductions as well as the more wide spread availability of Personal computers has led to a surge in the production and sales of flight simulator programs designed to simulate remote controlled flight. The best programs use a transmitter that is the same as the one used in actual flight situations. The transmitter is connected to the computer via a USB cable. Signals from the transmitter operate the simulated plane in the gaming display on the monitor exactly as a RC model would respond in actual flight. The training possibilities are what make the flight simulator much more than just another computer game. The ability to simulate the exact conditions and feel of a real RC model plane allows a person to perfect his flying skills on the simulator without risk to his expensive actual RC model. The simple basic landing and takeoffs can be practiced until they can be done perfectly. The more advanced maneuvers can be practiced again and again until perfection is achieved. Then you are ready to try them out with a real plane. Some of the better simulator programs include the Great Planes Realflight G3.5. It is considered by many to be the best software available. The G3.5 has several expansion modules that can be used with the basic program. This gives a person a wide choice of airplane types and graphic backgrounds. The Aerofly Pro Deluxe RC Flight simulator is another highly rated choice. It is possible to adapt your own transmitter for use with the software which gives an exact reproduction of the feel of the controls. A third highly rated software program is the Reflex XTR. One of the features of these high quality flight simulators is the ability to reproduce not only various flying environments, but also weather and visibility conditions. Some can reproduce night flying or simulate out of sight control of the aircraft when it flies behind an object and out of line of sight. Most Hobby Shops that sell RC vehicles will carry the RC flight simulators or have information on how to obtain them. As the motto of one highly rated flight simulator promises, first they will teach you how to fly an RC model plane and then they will make you an expert. Create a Home Spa Experience - Homemade Facials, Scrubs, and More

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Jessica Hardwick The same stress in our daily lives that makes us yearn for a spa experience often keeps us from taking the time out from a busy schedule to book a day of relaxation. Even with time, a day at the spa can be a big hit to wallet. While I often cant find the time (or budget) to be pampered in a luxurious spa, I do my best to treat myself with a home spa experience. When I take a few hours out of my schedule to treat myself right, I am rejuvenated and energized to take on the daily grind! I start with an extra-special bath experience by turning off the lights and using candles and incense to set the mood. While filling the tub with great smelling products, like chamomile and lavender for relaxation or rosemary and mint for rejuvenation, I set up the CD player with some groovy tunes and turn off the phone. High quality soaps and scrubs, along with a terry cloth face mitt, round out my routine. I always keep plenty of fresh-smelling, fluffy towels for the finish. Now its time out for my face. I like to start with a scrub to remove dead skin and prevent blackheads. In a small bowl, mix equal parts olive oil and granular brown sugar, and add a few drops of essential oil. I often use lavender and orange oil, but in a pinch, Ive used a few drops each of orange and vanilla extract its not surprising that I was dreaming of Dreamsicles while I scrubbed! Gently scrub your face and neck in small circles for a few minutes, avoiding the eye area. My skin tends to be as mercurial as my moods, so I whip up a mask based on how it feels that day. To remove blackheads: I mix a little warm water with baking soda, work it gently into the T-zone, and leave it on for 3-5 minutes. To moisturize: I mash 2 parts avocado with 1 part honey, apply and leave on for about 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Hint: If the doorbell rings ignore it a bright green face scares small children and men! To reduce oil: Whip up a whole egg with a spoonful of honey and a few drops of lemon juice. The egg white pulls out the oil, the vitamin A in the yolk helps heal blemishes, and the lemon is an astringent. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with cool water. To firm: Whisk together a spoonful each of honey and glycerin with an egg white and a few pinches of flour to create a paste. Rinse with cool water after 10-15 minutes. After any of these treatments, gently pat your face dry with a towel and moisturize well. To get my body smooth and add a glow to my skin, nothing beats a great salt scrub. Simply combine 1 cup of course sea salt or kosher salt with 1/2 cup of almond or olive oil and a spoonful of Vitamin E oil. Add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. Scrub all over, giving special attention to any rough patches, especially elbows and knees! To avoid irritation, be sure to either shave before scrubbing or wait a day to shave. To finish off I give myself a manicure and pedicure. Summer feet are for showing off so be sure to take the time to remove all the rough spots! A home spa day isnt as fabulous as getting the deluxe treatment at a real spa, but its a great way to rejuvenate and feel better about yourself without putting a big strain on your wallet! http://www.swapthing.com is a site focused on building a strong swap community online. A Yarn of a Tale

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Mary Welty Ive always had a pension for creating things. The idea of taking nothing and turning it into something always seemed to satisfy some deep inner desire. I suppose it all came from my mother. She was a crafter to put most others to shame. Much to my fathers annoyance, our house was always littered with the scraps and pieces of a million different projects, many never to be completed. Just finding a chair to sit in was a source of frustration for him. Would he be stabbed by a knitting needle? Or stand up covered in the stray pieces of fuzz from the stuffing of a new pillow. Pins seemed to be his greatest annoyance, since they would always find some sensitive spot in which to lodge themselves each time he leaned back in his chair to relax. Every corner of our house was occupied by a basket of yarn spilling its contents across the floor, destined to become a tangled mass after Ginger, a well meaning miniature poodle, decided it closely enough resembled one of her balls. Only after the yarn became hopelessly entangled about her feet, legs and neck, would she come whimpering into the family room, head hung dismally in shame. I dont know how this keeps happening, her misty brown eyes would plead. The yarn, long past salvaging, would eventually end up as a mass of snippets on the carpet as my brother and I patiently cut her loose. Surprisingly enough, my mother never became annoyed. After all, there was certainly more yarn where that came from. Indeed, my mother never ran out of yarn for any project. Thats not to say that a project was necessarily completed with the yarn it originally began with. Our front closet was forever an avalanche waiting to happen, its shelves heaped with scarves, hats and mittens all crocheted from a bit of this, mixed with a bit of that. Generally they all had one quality in common, a rather poor fit. She never seemed to know when to finish off a scarf. Its as though the peace she found in patiently adding row after row of double-crochet stitches just couldnt be brought to an end, and neither could the scarf. More appropriate in size to a table runner or bedspread, I would head off to school, my feet endlessly tripping over its tasseled or fringed ends. Now all grown up, with a family of my own, I think back on her peaceful evenings in front of the T.V. While I might have as many balls of yarn as she ever did, scattered about the house, stuffed in boxes, or spilling over from wicker baskets, I cant seem to reproduce her sense of contentment. She understood the art of enjoying the process as much as the accomplishment, while I, still focused on churning out that latest project, rush through the process to the final accomplishment. Yarn in hand, crochet hooks splayed out before me, children roughhousing in the background, and my husband wondering what time dinner will be, I muse on the differences between us. Process vs. accomplishment I wonder, and realize it hardly matters. I might not yet be able to achieve her sense of contentment, but Im quite sure the image my children see of their mother, as I patiently start counting off a series of chain stitches, looks remarkably similar to the memories I have of my own. How the Rules of Dating Have Changed

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton The rules of dating have changed drastically for American singles in this modern age of Internet dating services and fast-paced living. The rules of dating for both men and women have become a lot more complicated than they were a generation or so ago. I am happy with these changes because I think that the old social norms are flawed. The traditional approach where women waited to be pursued and never made the first move should be left behind in the past. These old norms are really unfair to men who would rather take a more passive role and to women who had more dominant personalities. In the past the rules were clear and understood by everyone, but everything is now different. The passing of time made have things much more complicated than they have ever been. Fortunately, people can turn to dating services that can help them understand the present rules of dating. Everything is quite simple if you go to a speed dating event. All you have to do is talk for a few minutes to a variety of potential matches. Perhaps you will be able to find people who have tastes that are similar to yours. From there the rules of dating will sort themselves out. However, nobody is sure if the social norms will stabilize and make the rules of dating easier to decode. Nevertheless, knowledge about the proper thing to do on a date is a matter of great importance for both men and women. In this day and age, many advice columnists and writers make their whole career off of people’s dating anxiety. Every one of each of them has a different approach when it comes to rules of dating. I think that there is no satisfactory guide to dating etiquette because we are in such an informal culture. The key to being in a date is to always act comfortable and at ease. If you are at ease, then your manner can put other people at ease. Your date can still be a success, even if you do not have a perfect grasp of the rules of dating. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning Rules of Dating. Visit our site for more helpful information about Rules of Dating and other similar topics. Snack Facts: The Incredible History Behind Some of Your Favorite Foods

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Suzanne Lieurance Quick…what’s your favorite snack? If you answered OREOS with milk, or RITZ Crackers and cheese, or maybe even a MOON PIE, then you just named a snack enjoyed by millions of people the world over. But do you know how some of these popular snack foods got their start? Many of these tasty tidbits have an awesome history. Check out the following incredible snack facts: THE INVENTION OF THE MOON PIE Bet you didn’t know the genuine MOON PIE is produced exclusively by the Chattanooga Bakery in Tennessee. But no one knows for sure how MOON PIES were invented. Supposedly, back in the early 1900’s, a man named Earl Mitchell, Sr. (a salesman for the bakery) was visiting one of the company stores that catered to coal miners. Mr. Mitchell asked the miners what they would like for a new snack. They told him they wanted something for their lunch pails - something solid that would fill them up. When Mr. Mitchell asked the miners what size they wanted this snack to be, one miner saw the moon rising. He put his hands up and framed the moon. Then he said, “just this size.” Mr. Mitchell went back to the bakery. He saw workers there coating graham cookies with marshmallow, then putting them on the window sill to harden. Mr. Mitchell asked them to put two of these cookies together and coat them with chocolate, and thats how the MOON PIE was invented! By the late 1950s, the MOON PIE was so popular it was all the bakery had money to produce. HOW FIG NEWTONS COOKIES GOT THEIR START The main ingredient for this famous snack is figs, of course, since FIG NEWTONS cookies are soft, cake-like cookies filled with a chewy fig jam. But, the creation of these delicious sweets wasn’t possible until 1891, when a special apparatus was invented just to make them. Until then there was no way to get the fig jam into the cake or the cake around the jam. James Henry Mitchell invented this special funnel within a funnel. The inside funnel supplies a stream of jam. The outer funnel produces a tube-like stream of dough, creating an endless rope of yummy, fig-filled cookies we know as FIG NEWTONS. RITZ CRACKERS ARRIVE ON THE SNACK SCENE Times were tough for Americans during the Great Depression. Few people could afford luxuries or fancy foods, but everyone wanted a great cracker. In 1934, the National Biscuit Company (now Nabisco) tried recipe after recipe before they developed what they knew would be the finest, tastiest cracker on the market. They named their luxurious, but affordable, cracker the RITZ Cracker (probably because anything glamorous, classy, or fancy was called “ritzy” back then). It was popular everywhere - from the most modest home to the elegant Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where it’s still a regular feature on the menu. THE BIRTH OF THE OREO COOKIE The OREO cookie was born in 1912, but no one seems to know for sure where the name came from. Since then over 362 billion of these cream-filled chocolate wonders have been eaten, making them the world’s most famous cookie. If all 362 billion OREO cookies were stacked on top of each other the pile would reach the moon and back more than five times. Now that’s a lot of cookies! KOOL-AID FIRST QUENCHES AMERICAS THIRST Did you know KOOL-AID is the official soft drink of Nebraska? KOOL-AID was invented in Hastings, Nebraska, in 1927, by a chemist named Edwin Perkins. As a child, Perkins developed many flavoring extracts and perfumes. This led to his own mail-order company, which eventually resulted in modern-day KOOL-AID. Nowadays KOOL-AID is an all American favorite. And, more KOOL-AID is sold the week right before and the week after the 4th of July than at any other period during the year. The next time someone asks you, “Quickwhats your favorite snack,” when you give them your answer, you might also share some of these incredible snack facts. Guide To Capitol Hill Careers

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Tony Jacowski Welcome to Capitol Hill, home to some of the most exciting and powerful people in the world. And those who aspire to a career on The Hill have not done so without having extreme ambition and definitely not without being aware of this fact. Capitol Hill offers some of the most exciting but highly demanding professional opportunities that you have ever dreamed of. The opportunities that Capitol Hill offers are summed up as openings in 535 congressional offices or 300 committees and subcommittees. Each of these hundreds of openings have a number of positions to offer depending on available vacancies and your qualifications. Why Capitol Hill? Everyone has her or his reasons for choosing to work on Capitol Hill. The general answers across the board are: 1) that Capitol Hill provides the opportunity to serve the country; 2)Capitol Hill has a very fast paced lifestyle or 3) A career on Capitol Hill will allow one to use a wide range of ones skills. While all these are valid, one Senate staffer said “One of the most exciting aspects of working on the Hill is the opportunity to participate in the workings of our democracy. The prestige of the place is nice, but for me the real satisfaction comes from knowing that the work we do makes a lot of difference in the lives of real people.” Different Positions On The Hill The fact is that there is no typical path for your career on Capitol Hill. With just ten Senators having had served for over 25 years, the spate of elections has let even fewer members of staff to spend a full career working for any one member of the Congress. This leads to high turnover rates and promotions for existing staff and new opportunities for job seekers. 1. Staff Assistant Or Receptionist: This first entry-level job for undergraduates and fresh graduates provides a salary of up to $23,849 for a House appointment and $22,505 for the Senate. Basic responsibilities are receiving guests, routing telephone calls and mail to respective staffers. 2. Legislative Correspondent: This is supposedly the next logical step for staff assistants. Typical duties include preparing draft responses to members letters, dealing with constituent requests and inquiries regarding legislation and national policies. There will be considerable administrative work in this position, hence the freedom from the front desk. Salaries range from $25,500 to $26,750. 3. Administrative Assistant Or Chief Of Staff: This is the highest-ranking position you can reach as staff to a Member of Congress. If you thought number of years spent on staff alone counts for getting to this position, think again. It is the trust that you foster with the Member, strong political instincts, overall administrative abilities that really see you rise to this position. Members can hire from within for this position or from a congressional delegation from their home state. They do not have an obligation to hire someone from their staff. Salaries range from close to $100,000 to $115,000. Opportunities on committees and subcommittees are no less abundant. Nevertheless, the work responsibilities differ from that of congressional duties. These committees are the Authorizing and Appropriating committees. Because of their competitive nature, Capitol Hill jobs are hardly advertised. Party affiliations, direct references or belonging to the Members home state all count when the time for recruiting comes. Networking is the key to getting in. Hint: post-election is the best time to try to get in the House Tony Jacowski is a certified Master Black Belt for Aveta Solutions Six Sigma Online ( http://www.sixsigmaonline.org ). Tips To Selecting Great Winter Wedding Invitations

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Shaunta Pleasant As winter time weddings become more and more popular, the desire and demand for the perfect winter wedding invitations is likely to only grow. It is important for those planning the perfect winter time weddings to start searching for the perfect winter wedding invitations as early as possible. The Number Of Guest In Attendance Is Vital After all, without the winter wedding invitations many other elements of the wedding will be difficult or even impossible to plan. The winter wedding invitations are the key to knowing how many of those invited will actually be able to attend the celebration. That information on the number of guests in attendance will be vital to many other aspects of wedding planning, from choosing the right size cake to renting an appropriately sized reception hall. Send The Invitations Out On Time Sending out the winter wedding invitations on time will also help to provide an accurate count of wedding guests to the caterer, certainly an important consideration, especially since many caterers charge per person. Shopping Early For Your Winter Wedding Invitations There are of course so many different kinds of winter wedding invitations that it can be difficult to choose just one design. That is another reason why it is so important to start shopping for the perfect winter wedding invitations as early as possible. Shopping early for those winter wedding invitations will also ensure that there is plenty of time for addressing and mailing those invites. Personalizing The Winter Wedding Invitations Many brides and grooms these days are choosing to personalize their winter wedding invitations in order to provide a more special memento of the big event. Adding a favorite line of poetry, a special line from a song or a favorite bible verse can make those winter wedding invitations that much more special, but it is important to allow extra time for this personalization. This extra time is also important if a special photograph or other touch will be included with the winter wedding invitations. Shaunta Pleasant is a professional writer and editor on wedding topics.
