Learn About Falun Dafa

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By David Snape I have been practicing an advanced form of qigong for almost 5years now. The name of this practice is Falun Dafa. Have you ever heard of or seen Tai Chi? Falun Dafa issimilar and yet very different. It is similar in the sense thatis has slow and gentle movements. It is dissimilar in the sensethat it is easy to learn. There are only 5 gentle exercises tothat are so simple and easy to learn that a small child or anextremely elderly person could still learn and do them. Another major advantage that Falun Dafa has is that it is free tolearn and practice. There are no class fees or ongoing monthlydues to pay. You can download video instructions from a FalunDafa web site or you can learn from an actual volunteerinstructor. The volunteer instructors can be found in almost every major cityaround the world. And they won’t charge anything to teach youthis wonderful, energizing, health promoting exercise practice. Iknow this for a fact because I also serve as a volunteerinstructor in the Kansas City area. So what have I obtained from the practice after 5 years? That’san easy and exciting question to answer. After just two months ofthis practice, a nagging and recurring back pain that I had formany years went away. I was able to stop getting back treatmentsfrom my chiropractor. That was 5 years ago and I haven’t neededany further treatment since. What is exciting about the above example is that previously Itried many things to alleviate my back problem. Nothing elseworked! I’ve always been relatively healthy with only minor health issuesthroughout my life. I have met other people that had more severehealth issues that also received total relief from practicingFalun Dafa. What do the exercises entail? Let’s talk about them here. What I’m about to describe is from my own experiences, if youwould like a more accurate description and explanation of theexercises, please reference a book by Li, Hongzhi, the man whobrought Falun Dafa out to the public. The name of his book isFalun Gong. You can get a copy of his book for free from the mainFalun Dafa web site, falundafa.org. The first exercise is a gentle one that involves stretching fromhead to toe. To perform one cycle of the exercise takes about 3or 4 minutes. It is done from a standing position with the kneesand hips relaxed, until the gentle upward stretch thataccompanies each of the exercise’s movements. When practiced this 3 or 4 minute exercise is usually repeatedthree times. In normal circumstances, it takes about 12 minutesto repeat this exercise a total of three times. The second exercise is a standing stance with 4 positions. Eachposition is held for a length of time that can vary depending onthe ability of the practitioner. In the beginning it would befine to just hold each position for maybe 1 minute each or evenless, depending on the person’s ability and comfort zone. Advanced practitioners might work up to as long as 7 minutes ormore for each position. However, you can gradual improve yourtime according to your own wishes and abilities. The third exercise is a gentle exercise where you move your armsup and down in front of the body. In the first half of thisexercise the hands go in opposite directions. In the second half, the arms go in the same direction. Each repetition of theexercise takes about 3 minutes. Generally, when practiced, people will repeat this exercise three times, for a total duration of about 9 minutes. The fourth exercise is similar but different in that the handstrace a path around the entire body. The path travels along thefront of the body and then up the back of the body. The handsreach about the level of the mid-back before being brought infront of the body again. The path is traced for a total of 9times constituting one repetition of the exercise. The fourth exercise is generally repeated three times whenpracticed. When done this way the total time to repeat thisexercise three times is about twelve minutes. The fifth exercise is done sitting down in the cross-leggedposition. The leg cross can be simple “Indian” style or slightlymore advanced depending on the ability and comfort zone of theperson practicing. There is a sequence of hand gestures at the beginning and thereare positions to hold. The duration of holding the hand positionscan vary. Once again, how long is determined by the personpracticing. Both how long you hold the hand positions and theoverall duration of the exercise are entirely at the discretionof the person practicing. In the beginning a person might only practice the fifth exercisefor a few minutes. Advanced users may practice for an hour orlonger. Again, it all depends on the ability and comfort level ofthe person practicing. These are very simple explanations of the exercises. For moredetailed and accurate accounts of the exercises read Falun Gongby Li, Hongzhi. Or alternatively, you can download hisinstruction videos from the main Falun Dafa web site mentionedpreviously. Mr. Li also has another book called Zhuan Falun, which to myunderstanding expounds on the characteristics of the universe:Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. I wrote that with the hyphensto underscore that this is one characteristic and not threeseparate ones. Again, that is my understanding about them andmuch more profound understandings can be found in the book ZhuanFalun itself. Because you can practice Falun Dafa with others in a groupsetting without being charged any initial or recurring fees, itseems like the perfect alternative to other exercises that chargemoney to participate in. Exercising with a group or alone is fineand each person may have his or her own preference on that. It’senjoyable either way. I personally practice it both ways. On the weekends we do have agroup practice here in the Kansas City area and you are welcometo come join us if you are in the area. Fortunately, many citiesthroughout the United States, Canada and around the world havesimilar group practices. You don’t have to come to Kansas City toenjoy this wonderful practice. I have one last item of note. It seems that some people can’tstand to see others enjoy something good. And this is nodifferent. The current person that runs China, Jiang Zemin, isterribly furious at people who practice Falun Gong for no logicalreason that anyone can come up with. He brutally persecutes thosewho practice it in China. If you want to learn more about the persecution of Falun Gong inChina, there is a web site that you can visit, faluninfo.net.They even offer suggestions to help end the persecution if youare so inclined. I do hope you get the chance to experience what I have from thepractice. The health of my body and a deep sense of peace andwell being are some of what I have obtained. Herbal Weight Loss

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Clive Jenkins I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no magical overnight pill which will shed those stubborn pounds. Having said that, there are a number of organic materials which might be more effective than you would think. Yes, that’s right, many dieters across the world have chosen to go with a herbal weight loss programme, to great results. There are certain types of herbs which manage to effectively suppress the appetite and leave the body feeling fuller on less calories. That way, you aren’t tempted to eat as much, as so you ultimately lose weight through going about your daily life. Some herbs contain natural stimulants which help keep you active and off that sofa, whilst some suppress the appetite for those who find their sweet tooth so hard to ignore. Before ingesting any herbs as part of a herbal weight loss programme it is important to check they are recognized medically as been safe for human consumption. There are some substances which should not be consumed, as they contain highly toxic properties which are potentially very dangerous for our vital organs. That aside, herbal weight loss is a proven method of reducing weight quickly, leaving you looking and feeling great, whilst helping rid your body of those unwanted toxins which hinder the immune system. A good herb for those looking to lose weight is cayenne. If you don’t mind the spicy, try cayenne with your meals, which helps speed up the metabolism and increase heart rate safely to get you burning those calories without lifting a finger. Another good herb to try is seaweed, which is great for clearing the toxins in the bloodstream, and is also a fantastic source of vitamins and minerals to help the body remain fit and healthy. Also, why not try green tea as a healthy stimulant with a high vitamin C content to get you up and moving and keep your insides gleaming? If your looking for particular herbs to avoid, you should pay particular attention to herbal laxatives which can cause serious problems for the bowel and the digestive system if used on a frequent basis. Also avoid ephedra which has been proven to increase blood pressure to a dangerously high level and have a negative impact on the central nervous system. As long as you take care to avoid dangerous substances, herbal weight loss is a highly effective natural method for slimming down. If you are unsure about what herbs are safe to consume, check online for a brief run down, or consult your physician for more information. He will be capable of explaining the risks and benefits of certain herbs, and will be able to make recommendations based on your general state of health and wellbeing. It is always a good idea to visit your doctor before embarking on any weight loss measures, so this would be a good opportunity to air any concerns you may have, and suppress any anxieties about your weight or the dietary methods you are considering. I Hate My Job: Does This Sound Like Something You Say?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Carl Mueller I hate my job. Do you find yourself saying this on a regular basis? Do you dread having to face another day at work? Do you sometimes wish youd be fired or laid off just to escape your daily prison? If so, join the club. You might be surprised how many people spend years (and years and years) staying in the same job that they hate. If you constantly say to yourself I hate my job then its time you did something about it. And if youre the type of person who keeps telling your friends I hate my job and expecting that they will care, youd really better start doing something about it before you lose all your friends. No one likes to hang around a whiner especially one who says the same thing over and over again without doing anything to fix it. If you truly hate your job, your personal life can suffer as a result and you can spiral into depression and a feeling of helplessness especially if you cant see any other options to pursue. As a recruiter, I can understand why people say I hate my job but I cant understand why they expect me to feel sorry for them when they do nothing to change things! To fix this situation, first figure out what it is that you hate about your job and either fix it or start looking for a new job. If you truly hate your job, youll do something about it rather than just talking about it. Who wants to spend 8 hours plus per day doing something they hate just to get a check? Lets look at a list of possible statements you might be making that show specifically what it is that you hate about your job: I hate my job. No particular reason needed, you just hate your job. Are you proud of your work? Are there any accomplishments you are happy with? If not, maybe you dont just need a new job, you need a new career. Start looking outside your current industry. Have you considered self-employment? I hate my job because Im underpaid: Easy to fix. Ask for a raise. In this case you dont really hate your job, you hate the fact that you are underpaid at least in your mind. If you work for a notoriously cheap company, you might need to switch companies. If you work in an industry that doesnt make its employees rich, you might need to change industries. Money isnt the best reason to switch jobs but if your salary doesnt match your lifestyle, something has to change. I hate my job because its boring: Perhaps you have become underemployed. If you are bored, you might not be utilizing all the skills you have or you may have finally realized you are in the wrong industry. Think of what makes you happy and then figure out how you can get paid to do it. I like that old adage that says that if you find a job that you love, youll never work a day in your life. I hate my job because I hate my boss/co-workers/company: Certainly, you cant pick your boss or co-workers but you can pick the company you work for. We wont always get along with everyone we work with so its not uncommon to want to switch jobs because of personal conflicts with others. Be careful though: if you find that you have trouble getting along with people at every job you have, maybe its not the other people that are the problem. I hate my job but I cant quit: Perhaps its the stock options, maybe its the nice expense account and company car, maybe its the high salary that you know you wont be able to get from another company if you switch jobs. Sometimes golden handcuffs prevent people from switching jobs that they hate because theyd have to give up too much if they quit. Then again, Ive seen instances of people leaving high-paying jobs that they hated to accept lower paying jobs that they are much happier with. You might need to prioritize and figure out what is more important: the money or your happiness. Ideally youll have both of course but maybe this is impossible in your current job. I hate my job because Im embarrassed of what I do: Maybe you work in an industry that youve realized does not fit your morals. Maybe you feel embarrassed to discuss your job or industry with friends who you feel have better jobs that you do. Ive certainly come across enough job searchers who are ashamed to discuss their job with others. Personally, I think that as long as you are doing something ethical that you like and can earn a reasonable living from, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Not everyone thinks this way though. Before making any career-altering decisions, remember that your job must make you happy, not other people. Working at a job you hate is no way to spend a significant part of your life. If you truly hate your job, you will no doubt see other aspects of your life suffer, too. Before you can fix the problem of constantly saying I hate my job you need to figure out what it is specifically that you hate about it. Then you can decide what to do to fix it or if it is not fixable, what you are going to be doing next for a living. Once you do this, you will no longer have to say I hate my job and youll be happier and more prosperous because of it. Carl Mueller is an Internet entrepreneur and professional recruiter. Purification That Sweetens Life’s Experiences

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Jeanie Marshall Purification is not a word I invented. It has been in the dictionary for a long time. However, when I used it for first time many years ago to refer to a clients condition which he called sickness, it did seem as if I had made a new discovery. This man suddenly had a different and more empowering perspective of what was happening. He was willing to be purified, yet seconds before he viewed his condition as sickness, vacillating between resisting it and trying to mask it. Purification by Another Name Can be Sweet, or Not Purification is not always sweet. It is primarily after the purification process that you experience the sweetness or clarity or freedom. The naming of a thing can make all the difference in the way you relate to it. Here are some names that are often applied to the process of purification: Detoxification; Detox; Retracing; Illness; Sickness; flu, cold, headache; Healing Crisis; Correcting Crisis; Health Correction; Paradigm Shift; Recycling Toxicity; Release; Cleansing; Cleansing Response; Chronic/Acute Condition; -itis; Recoiling; Pattern Breaking; Falling Apart; Breakdown; Breakthrough. And perhaps you have others you could add to the list. Levels of Experience So often I speak and write about four levels of experience: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Of course, these are not mutually exclusive categories. While your attention may be on one dimension, all the other levels are somehow involved in each experience, even if you are not aware. I do find that when distinguishing these four levels (or layers or bodies or parts or aspects), they are easier to sort out, and therefore, they are easier to clear out. Integration follows differentiation. Ultimately, you want to be in touch with the whole; familiarity with the parts enhances familiarity with the whole. Through my ability to read information in the energy field, I know that the density of these levels becomes finer when proceeding from one to another in the order listed. That is, the physical level is the most dense (for example, you can see, touch, hear it), the emotional level is less dense, the mental level is an even finer vibration, and the spiritual level is the finest and lightest of all four. I have trained myself to see, touch, and hear in the emotional, mental, and spiritual levels and consider this as natural as accessing the physical level in these ways. A Day for a Year A client of mine, Sue, embarked on a personal purification process several years ago when she committed herself to a 49-day juice fast, supervised by a health care practitioner and me. Her intention was to clear anything from her body that she did not need. She thought of it primarily as a physical cleansing, but also experienced powerful healing in other ways. The emotional release often took her by surprise. In addition, she was constantly aware of how her mental body was working. And she experienced herself as more spiritually attuned. It was a delight to check her energy field each day and notice the changes. In addition to the fasting from solid foods, she reflected and wrote about a year of her life, counting backwards. So, the first day, she released anything that may have accumulated during the current year; the second day, she released anything that may have accumulated during the previous year when she was forty-eight, and so on. The forty-ninth day coincided with the year of her birth. Throughout the 49 days, she carried on a full days work, usually six days a week. A Recent Personal Purification A few months ago, I unexpectedly engaged in a purification process. This began at a three-day conference in an extremely toxic environment: a hotel conference center during the day and hotel sleeping room at night. The conference was sandwiched between two airplane flights. I am not accustomed to being without fresh air for more than an hour or so at a time. As my body started to release the toxic overload, I began to feel sick. My head ached, my joints stiffened, and I felt listless. My body was reacting to the toxins; more precisely, my immune system was working properly to release the toxins. Just as my clients find it helpful when I re-frame their disempowering situations, I immediately re-framed my situation by converting the thoughts of sickness/illness to acknowledge that my body was strong enough to eject toxicity. Truly, when the body is healthy enough, it does release toxins. Most of these symptoms are mildly to very uncomfortable; however, when you understand the process, you are more likely to cooperate than resist. Without this understanding, you are likely to reach for some substance to repress the symptoms so that you do not have to feel uncomfortable. I grew up with parents who did not want their children to experience such discomforts. We were given many over-the-counter remedies and prescribed drugs. I equate this to removing the batteries in the smoke detector because you find the sound annoying when the detector works properly and gives its warning. I have not taken any drug (prescribed or over-the-counter) for many years. True for Me; True for Others? I often experiment with healing processes for myself because I have been challenged by some health conditions over the years. In addition, processes pop into my mind and flow from my lips or finger tips for clients and others. Sometimes my personal experiences serve as great barometer for others’ experiences; other times they do not. Of course, when I report my own personal experience, I am reporting just that: one persons experience. As valid and helpful as that may be, it is not appropriate to generalize one persons experiences to everyones experiences. I am fortunate to have information from so many others to help me to make generalizations and see patterns: clients, workshop participants, web site visitors, subscribers, and thousands who benefit from my services on the Internet. All those connections serve to reinforce that each one of us is unique. Purification as Week One The principles of purification I have discovered when working with myself and clients have served as a solid foundation for the first week of the DailyAffirm Process. The first week of each calendar month is devoted to purification called Releasing/Cleansing. About purification, I have learned that a little goes a long way and often less is better. These are, of course, cliches, but they connote important dynamics. I have found that those who benefit most from the DailyAffirm messages are the ones who know how deeply to work with each message. As with any discipline, you need to know when to be unrelenting in following a practice and when to be gentle with yourself. I suggest you not construct a lot of rules (e.g., I must do this every day for twenty minutes.), which further limits you. Since the purpose of purification is to release limitations, it is wise to avoid adding new limitations. The Bottom Line for Purification The true test for knowing the success of a purification program is to experience greater clarity or health or freedom when it is complete. You can call the program by any label that seems appropriate from a cold to a healing crisis or an illness or a rose but the results at the end must make you feel more pure and vibrant, otherwise it is not a purification program. Using Lasers in Beauty Treatments

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Gabriel J. Adams The word laser brings to mind images of science fiction spaceship fights, and other futuristic harmful uses. Lasers, however, are much more frequently used to help people rather than to harm them. The use of lasers in beauty treatments is a relatively new development, but their precise targeting and many different levels of strength make lasers an ideal tool in cosmetic procedures. One of the first ways that lasers were used in beauty treatments was in laser hair removal. Performed even more frequently today. The laser is aimed at your skin and is pulsed at a point of dark pigment (the hair itself), which is meant to cause a thermal charge which destroys the hair follicle at the end of the hair. This causes the existing hair to fall out and also kills the hair follicle so that future hair cannot grow. Generally, light skinned individuals with dark hair tend to have the best results from laser hair removal, and the process is not as effective on blond, red or gray hair. If the laser hair removal is not done correctly, however, it can cause burns and other unwanted skin problems. Lasers can also be used to remove unwanted skin decorations, as in tattoo removal. Tattoos have become more and more popular over the last few years, and people are also becoming more concerned with removing tattoos that were done in their youth. Laser tattoo removal is a process where a laser is aimed at the dark ink in the layers of your skin. The laser literally burns away this dark ink via a chemical reaction, causing the tattoo to disappear over several treatments. Tattoo removal generally works best on professional tattoos that were performed with dark colors of ink, Lasers help doctors and cosmeticians everyday in their quest to make their patients look better. There are many other medical and scientific uses of lasers but the cosmetic industry definitely owes a big thank you to this technology. Visit our site for info on Laser Hair Removal, Tattoo Removal. Gray Hair - Step By Step Color Guide To Dye Gray Hair

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Terri Bennett Had enough of standing in front of the mirror and plucking out your sneaky, little gray hairs that seem to be sprigging-up more and more. Well I am going to help you decide what color is best for you and your hair and guide you along with an easy step by step guide to getting rid of gray hair. 1. First of all you need to decide how much of your hair is gray, look at your hair and estimate a percentage of gray. 2. Use a semi-permanent if you estimate your hair is around 20 percent gray. The semi-permanent will begin to fade after 6-12 washes. So your hair will require frequent re-coloring if you shampoo your hair everyday. 3. If your hair is around 50 percent gray then I would opt for a longer lasting semi-permanent, often called a quasi. These colors will last roughly around 24-28 washes. So if quasi isnt labeled on the box then look to see how many weeks the color will last which will be on the box. If your hair is more than 50 percent gray and you are looking to color most or all of your gray hair then you will need a permanent dye. If you are more than 50 percent gray and you would prefer a semi-permanent then that is okay but you should know that all of your gray will not be covered, however some clients actually prefer this as: A small amount of gray left which looks very natural. People that see your hair will just assume you dont color your hair because they can see a little gray, when in actual fact most of it is covered! You dont need to do touch-ups (roots) as often. Semi-permanents are kinder on the hair and leave hair with an incredible shine and in great condition. 4. If you decide that your hair needs a permanent dye then I would advise doing a strand test. One reason for this is to check your hair is compatible with the chemicals in the color. Secondly, to assess the result of the color. Cut off about a of an inch of hair from underneath, near your neck and bind one end with some tape. Mix a small amount of the hair color solution from the directions on the box. Place the hair swatch in the solution and leave for least amount of time according to the box. (Its generally around 40 minutes). Although do keep checking for the desired color, take a note of the time it took. How to choose the right shade Choose colors that closely match your natural color. The natural color youre looking for is not the gray; its the darker strands in your hair. Once you have determined your natural hair color consider a shade darker for your chosen color as the color can appear lighter than expected, and will most likely fade a little due to washing and UV rays from the sun. You will need to regularly touch-up your roots, around 6-8 weeks depending on your hair growth. I would suggest coloring your hair on a Saturday morning, if possible, so you have time get used to your new look before you go back to work. Give yourself plenty of time to apply the color as it may seem tricky at first. Take your time and apply neatly over your hair. Be especially neat around your hair line as the color will stain to a certain degree. However there are ways to prevent bad staining by apply a small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around your hair hairline and the tops of your ears and around the back of your neck. Make sure you dont get any petroleum jelly on your hair as this will act as a barrier against the color, which means you will be left with patches of hair uncolored. Lay an old towel over the bathroom and wear an old top. Wear fitted protective gloves and now you can begin the coloring process. Follow the directions on the box exactly. Set the timer and sit back and relax while you wait for your hair to develop. Top 3 Donts When Coloring your Hair! 1. If you have used a Henna Color, make sure you never use any Chemical products on it i.e. Color and Perm solution as the chemical reaction will be extremely damaging to your hair, scalp and skin. You will have to wait until it grows out. 2. Some color-enhancing products can be quite irritable to the scalp so always test on very small amount before hand. (back of your neck or behind your ear) 3. Avoid chlorine for a few days after coloring, this could change the color. Cure For The Common Cold? No, But Close

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By S. Wagner I haven’t had a cold in 10 years. It’s true. I don’t even know what the word sniffle means. I think if my body ever did come down with a cold again it wouldn’t even know how to deal with it. And no, I haven’t found a cure for the common cold. What I’ve found is some common sense living that I’m going to pass along to you in this article. You may not go 10 years without a cold, but you will certainly feel a lot better than you do now. The actual common cold is caused by a variety of viruses. But the underlying cause of getting a cold is not the virus itself. The cause is allowing ourselves to get run down. Not enough sleep, improper diet and just an overall unhealthy lifestyle are the things that allow these viruses to invade our bodies and make us ill, sometimes violently so. If it sounds like I am saying that by simply getting enough rest and eating well would be enough to ward off a common cold, well, in a sense, yes, that’s exactly what I am saying. The only reason that we even have symptoms when we come down with a cold is because this is our body’s immune system fighting off whatever foreign invaders have happened to land on our doorstep. So in a sense, if you feel like hell, at least that means your body’s immune system is working. But it doesn’t have to come down to that. There is no reason to have to suffer from these terrible symptoms. No, dangerous drugs are not the answer. Healthy eating, vitamins and plenty of rest are the answers. There are a number of natural things you can do to get rid of your cold quickly once you get one. The most important is to take lots of vitamin C. You can safely take 5000 units a day because vitamin C is passed through the urine. Drinking lots of fluids is very important. When we become ill, our bodies have a tendency to dehydrate, so drinking fluids actually becomes critical. Herb teas are excellent for when you have a cold. Herbs have healing properties that will help get you back on your feet in no time. Drinking fresh fruit juices (not bottled or can) is also very good. Go get yourself an orange squeezer. It’s well worth the investment. The most important thing though, and this is what most people just don’t get, is that when you get a cold, you have to get plenty of rest. Many people drag themselves to work thinking that they can work through it. This is a big mistake and what causes most colds to become something much worse. Your job will still be there in the morning. You might not be if you don’t take care of yourself. By following the above tips, there is no reason you can’t fight off a cold without having to take harmful medications. I don’t even take an aspirin anymore. So it can be done. History Of Peach Trees, Prunus Persica

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Patrick Malcolm Peach trees, Prunus persica, are originally believed to have come from China to the Mideast through the trade routes known to extend to Turkey and Iran (Persia). The peach seeds could be used to plant and grow trees throughout North Africa and Europe and finally were introduced to America in the mid 1500’s. The first appearance of peaches in China may date back to 2000 BC. Historians believe that peach trees were first introduced into the colonial settlements of the United States by the French explorers in 1562 at territories along the Gulf coastal region near Mobile, Alabama, then by the Spaniards who established Saint Augustine, Florida in 1565 on the Atlantic seaboard. The peach trees were planted from peach seed imported from Europe in an effort to establish a self sustaining, agricultural. fruit tree product to feed the colonists. American Indians spread the planting of the peach trees throughout vast territories by transporting the peach seed to other tribes that lived in the interior regions. This new crop of fruit was fast growing, producing a delicious peach two or three years from planting. The trees were so productive and vigorous that sometimes, widespread impenetrable thickets became established from the peach seeds that fell to the ground from fruit unharvested. The illusion was formed by settlers after 1600 that the peach trees were native to the United States, since they were so widely spread and grew so vigorously everywhere. William Bartram, the famous American botanist and explorer, wrote in his book, Travels, in 1773 several accounts of his observations of ancient peach and plum orchards growing in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Bartram visited the ruins of a French plantation in 1776 near Mobile, Alabama, and recorded “I came presently to old fields, where I observed ruins of ancient habitations, there being abundance of peach and fig trees loaded with fruit.” Peach trees are grown primarily as a fruit tree; however, great interest in the non-fruiting, flowering peach tree was shown by President Thomas Jefferson who planted a double flowered tree that spectacularly bloomed at his home in Virginia in 1805. Flowering peach trees rate high, and desirable new cultivars of ornamental peach trees are available for planting and flowering with colors of white, pink, red, and peppermint (a mixture of red and white flower petals). These flowering peach trees are sterile in fruit production and bloom early in the spring, loaded with large colorful clusters of single or double flowered peach petals. Peaches are less popular as a fresh fruit than a few years ago, primarily because most commercial peach cultivars (varieties) are tailored by hybridizers to grow and ship as a firm fruit. The firmness of these peaches is important when a grower considers shipping the peach fruit long distances, but not enough attention has been given by plant hybridizers to saving the ancient qualities of aroma, juiciness, flavor, and seed separation from the pulp. Another problem damaging fresh peach sales is that the labor hired to pick the fruit from the tree is not properly trained nor personally concerned in the ultimate ripening of the peach fruit into a juicy, soft, delicious, tasty peach. The peaches are simply picked too soon and too firm to provide a fruit product that compared to a backyard orchard, tree-ripened delicacy that our older citizens often experienced in their grandfather’s back yard garden. Most of the peaches grown by commercial orchards today are fruits that are harvested while too firm with a seed that clings to the pulp called a “clingstone” peach. The best flavored peaches ripen soft and the seed easily separates from the edible portion, and these are called “freestone” peaches. Peach trees grown in the United States differ greatly from the aggressive, disease resistant, tasty, aromatic fruits grown by the early Americans. Over the centuries, the immune qualities of the peach trees to insects and diseases have been bred out by hybridizers, and these qualities have been replaced by inferior genes that make it difficult to buy a good flavorful peach at the store. The alternative to this problem is to buy tree ripened soft fruit at a fruit stand, pick-your-own orchard, or to grown your own backyard garden peaches concentrating on planting and growing old cultivars of the non-commercial home garden types. Peach trees in America have steadily declined in vigor in the past 300 years, to the point that the life expectancy is only 15-20 years or less. This factor has been explained by some fruit tree observers as due to an array of incremental factors, such as disease and insect weakening of the tree and leaves, nematodes, and improper soils and drainage; however, these problems pre-existed in the environment, when peach trees were introduced into America. The likely explanation of peach tree decline is more probably connected to the weak gene immunity that has appeared in peach tree hybridization focused toward commercial tree production that ends with an early, firm peach, clingstone, with shipping advantages to distant markets. The peach tree grows into a handsome canopy of dark-green rich foliage to a height of 6 to 10 feet. Most peach trees available in the United States are adapted and grown successfully in over 30 states. The grafted semi-dwarf peach trees are self pollinated, even before the flowers fully open, and the tree is cold hardy to negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit; however, the red to pink delicate flowers can be damaged by temperatures below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Some orchardists like light frosts that will thin the bloom set, producing larger fruit. If extremely heavy flowering occurs, the excess flowers can be removed to 6 inch intervals, or by a chemical thinning that results in a much more marketable crop of fruit. A developing peach can grow in various sizes of individual fruits on the same tree that requires considerable grading before marketing. The peach is covered with a characteristic fuzz that some growers prefer to reduce or removed mechanically before sales. A nectarine is nothing more than a fuzzless peach, even though certain distinct cultivars of nectarines are offered. In his classic 12 volume book of botanical insight in 1921, Luther Burbank in Fruit Improvement believed that the peach had evolved from a nectarine-like ancestor with the fuzz developing as a shield of protection, unlike the fuzzless nectarine. He theorized that the fuzz shielded the fruit from sunshine, moisture, wind, insect, and disease damage. The nectarine, he felt, was repressed by evolutionary restraints, because the nectarine lacked fuzz as a protective armor. The cousin of the nectarine, the almond, was crossed by Burbank in order to create a nectarine fruit with an edible almond pit, thus two crops from one hybridization, a fruit and an edible nut. Burbank also performed many interspecific crosses of peach with nectarine. The peach is quite fragile and subject to bruising if handled roughly. Peach trees require a certain number of chilling hours in order to break dormancy properly and set a good crop of fruit. During a season most States will experience 500 chill hours in the winter; however, in many states, like central and southern Florida, the trees will not fruit properly unless cultivars are planted to fulfill low chilling requirements. It is very important to plant and grow peach trees on well drained soils. The fruit tastes better if trees are planted in the full sun, so that the early morning light will dry the dew on the peach leaves and fruit. Peach trees should be planted 12-15 feet apart in rows and will benefit by the application of lime and phosphate fertilizers around the ground beneath the branches. Weeds will be prevented in backyard orchards by heavily mulching, but otherwise the weeds should be mowed or sprayed with herbicides. Several kinds of peach varieties are usually planted to extend the availability and ripening of the fruit on the trees. Many cultivars are recommended for planting, such as: the Belle of Georgia, Elberta, Hale Haven, Harvester, Indian Blood Cling, Red Haven, Reliance, Gala, May Gold, Southern Pearl, Suwanee, Florida King, Florida Dawn, and many other low chill Florida fruiting cultivars. Peaches contain antioxidants that are important health considerations in maintaining healthy bodies. Many websites that recommend eating pits of peaches or apricots to prevent cancer should be urged to research the fact that the seeds contain a poison organic chemical, cyanogen, which produces fatal cyanide poisoning that has caused sudden death for many people, including Steve McQueen, a famous movie actor of the last century. Peach fruit has been demonstrated to contain healthy portions of Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Niacin. Peaches also contain the minerals Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, and Potassium. Peach trees may be planted in various semi-dwarf sizes and ages for backyard fruit gardens and occasionally larger trees will grow fruit the first year of planting, but small trees usually begin bearing in the third year. Be A Safer Driver By Not Using Your Cell Phone in the Car Instead Try A Hands Free Phone

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Gorman]Tim Gorman Cell phones are a great way to keep in touch but they can ring at the most inconvenient times and you just know that you have to answer them. But is it always a good idea to answer your phone while you are driving and is its safe to do so? One answer is to use a kit that has a speaker attached to it so that you do not have to hold the phone when you are using it. This a great way to make sure that you can keep both hands on the wheel but there are other reasons for not using your phone in the car. Of course if you are not actually holding the phone then it should be a lot safer and it does seem that it is a much better idea than just holding the phone while you are driving. But it is not just the fact of whether you are actually holding the phone that is the real issue. The main thing is whether using the phone distracts you or not. If you are, then it is not a good idea to use it. But if you think that you concentrate just as well then it might not be an issue. It sound as though talking to a hands free cell phone would be no more dangerous than talking to a passenger that with you in the car. But it is not the same. The passenger in the car is on the journey with you and will react to the road the same way that you will. If you have to do something they will automatically pause the conversation so that you are able to concentrate on what you are doing. But if you are talking on your cell phone then the person on the other end will not know that anything is happening and will just not pause so that you can see what you are doing and your concentration will not automatically switch from one to the other. It is possible that some of your concentration will stay on the person that is still talking rather than on the road. So if you need to make or answer a call when you are driving it is a good idea to pull over. There is rarely a situation that cannot wait for a few minutes while you find somewhere to park and it will make your driving a lot safer as well.
