You might have heard in the news that scientists are looking for a fat gene so that they can develop new drugs to address obesity. Due to these news reports you might be under the false assumption that your genes cause you to be fat. I’m sure you have heard people say the reason that I’m overweight is that it in my genes, my whole family is overweight, it’s in our genes. Nothing can be further from the truth. Some people have been led to believe that the condition of their body is predestined based on their genetic makeup. They believe that if their mother and or father were fat then they will be fat because it in their genes. This is a load of nonsense. While genetic make up does contribute to your potential body it does not determine if you are fat or not. Only you and your beliefs about your body determine the kind of body you have. If your mother was lazy are you destined to be lazy? If your father was a womanizer are you destined to be a womanizer? The obvious answer is no. To believe that your genes control the destiny of your body is a very dangerous belief. First of all it is a disempowering belief. By believing that you are predestined to be fat takes all of the responsibility off of you. How sad is this, by diluting your personal power you relinquish your position as the captain of your ship, the creator of your life experience. You become a victim, forever enslaved, not by the pre programming of your ancestors but by your misconceptions. Scientists working in the fields of biology and physics are discovering that a persons beliefs actually alters their cellular structure. Your genes are not the problem, it’s your beliefs. If you believe that you are destined to be overweight, your subconscious mind and your cells will support that belief. Scientists have proven that how you think and what you believe alters your biology. It’s your beliefs that cause your genes to change and cause you to be overweight. I need to repeat this, your beliefs about your body and food determine if you are overweight. Let’s focus on a person who believes that he is overweight due to his genes. What this belief does is creates an attitude of no matter what I do I’m going to be fat so I might as well enjoy myself and eat some doughnuts. This person has relinquished all responsibility for his body. This gets compounded because his disempowering belief that he is predestined to be overweight actually alters his cells, so his cells will support his belief. His cells will alter themselves so that fat cells continue to build up on his body and his metabolism will slow down making it harder for him to lose the weight. The first step in losing weight is altering your beliefs. You need to believe that you can lose weight; you need to believe that you deserve to lose weight; you need to believe that you will lose weight. Without first instilling this belief system you can never be successful in losing weight. So how does one change their beliefs? First you need to determine what disempowering beliefs you have concerning your body and your weight. The best way to do this is to listen to yourself. Listen not only to things you say out loud but also things you say to yourself. I can’t lose weight, I look fat, I feel fat these are examples of disempowered thinking. Each one of these thoughts is programming your subconscious and your biology. Once you catch yourself saying or thinking a negative thought counter it by using an I choose statement. A negative statement such as I can’t lose weight would become I choose to believe that I can lose weight. I feel fat would become I choose to feel myself being lighter and thinner. Do this for 30 days and you will notice positive results. After 30 days your body will begin to respond and you will feel happier and optimistic. By Carl Mueller Can you earn more money working on a contract than working in a fulltime job? Having spent several years specifically working as an IT recruiter filling Information Technology positions, I certainly saw my fair share of highly paid contractors. In most instances, contractors earned more money on an hourly basis than they would have earned had they been doing the same job in a fulltime capacity being paid a salary. The reason contractors tend to be paid more? With a contract job, you are typically signed to do the job for a specific length of time so accepting the contract means you’re taking yourself off the market for a fulltime position for the length of the contract. In my experience as an IT recruiter, contracts generally ran for 3, 6, or 12 months in length and could sometimes be extended, often several times. Also, with a contract position you generally don’t get paid any benefits, don’t get paid for vacation and might not be eligible for other perks that fulltime staff might otherwise be entitled to. Sometimes a contract job turned into a fulltime position later on. With contract work, I often found that once people tasted the (higher) contract money, they didn’t want to work as a fulltime employee anymore. Also, many of them liked the variety of work and the fact that they were exposed to different work environments, technologies, etc. The flipside of course is that contractors might end up finding themselves out of work for periods of time if one contract finishes and they haven’t found a new contract to go to. Then again, perhaps they could afford to take time off given the money they were earning. If you’re considering contract work you should be aware that some employers have difficulty hiring people for fulltime positions who have a track record of working contract. They often fear that if a contractor accepts their fulltime position, they will end up quitting the fulltime job the moment a more desirable (ie. better paying) contract position arises. If you’re looking at a specific contract job, you might consider why the job is being offered as a contract. Does the company simply require someone for a set period of time and are willing to pay extra for this person (ie. the position is a “typical” contract) or are they simply trying to avoid adding a fulltime employee (ie. extra headcount) which might mean they’ll simply offer you the fulltime equivalent salary for the period you would be working with no premium paid? I once experienced the latter situation and can tell you that I was simply paid the fulltime equivalent since there was a fulltime hiring freeze in the company and my manager got around it by classifying my job as “contract.” In this instance, I certainly didn’t paid get the higher “contractor” rate, that’s for sure! The good news was that after working on contract for about 9 months, I was hired as a fulltime employee so things turned out quite well for me. By Doug Green Plants such as fuchsia and geraniums can be pruned back the end of Februray to early March. The long lanky growth of winters low sunlight should be pruned back hard. This stringy growth is not strong enough to support the weight of profuse summer blossoms and unless the plant is cut back, this summer the plant will look ugly when it should be a showpiece in your garden. I used to simply whack the geraniums back to six or eight inch stubs from their twelve to eighteen inch stems and allow them to regrow and resprout from their stalks. Remember that the more new growth you have on an annual plant, the more flowers it will produce. Plants that have woody stems such as fuchsia should not be so drastically pruned. Cut back leaving four to five side side shoots to remain on the main stem. Each of the side shoots can similarly be pruned back leaving only four or five leaves on each of the side shoots. Remember the cardinal rule of pruning. If you make a thinning cut (a cut that takes a shoot off from where it started as a bud) it will clear out and open up the plant. You will have reduced shoots from a thinning cut. If you make a topping cut (a cut anywhere else but where the shoot started as a bud) then you will increase the number of shoots and growth. In annual flowers, we use topping cuts to increase the number of shoots and subsequent flowers. Do use a sharp knife or garden pruners to make the cuts. Raggedly cuts seem to heal slower and are, well ugly. Sharp tools are the mark of a good gardener and they are also much easier on your hands. As far as paths go, keep this in mind, that a path should always lead to somewhere and to direct one to a definite place. Now, straight, even paths are not unpleasing if the effect is to be that of a formal garden. To avoid an abrupt curve and a whirligig effect in a curved path, t is far better to stick to straight paths unless you can make a really beautiful curve. Garden paths may be of gravel, of stepping stones, of dirt, or of grass. One sees grass paths in some very lovely gardens. They may not work well in small gardens with limited garden areas that they are re-spaded each season.
